Dundalk Racecourse History

The earliest record of racing taking place in the vicinity of Dundalk was in the early part of the 19th century at Blackrock Strand and Haggardstown. The current racecourse is just half a mile from the town at Dowdallshill and held its inaugural meeting on 28th May 1889. The management are very progressive and on 26th August 2007 opened the first all-weather racecourse in Ireland, which includes a greyhound track, so ensuring that the facilities are constantly used throughout the year. The 1 ¼ mile floodlit left-handed oval course has a polytrack surface, with feature races the Diamond Stakes, a Group 3 race over 1 mile 2 furlongs and 150 yards, and the Mercury Stakes over 5 furlongs. It originally staged Flat and National Hunt meetings until 2002, but now offers Flat racing only. Currently the course hosts 37 fixtures annually.

Although Dundalk remains a thriving racecourse, nearby Mullacurry closed its gates for the final time in 1958.
The Mullacurry racecourse was actually situated in the Townland of Paughanstown in the present day parish of Dunleer. Racing began in 1859 when known as Ardee Races, and was first referred to as Mullacurry Races for the May 1864 meeting. A prominent meeting took place on 11th May 1872 when a detailed report in the Dundalk Herald showed the extent of the support by people far and wide, and the excitement generated, particularly in the younger generation. Many of the enclosures were free and there was an abundance of stands from which sweets of all descriptions, apples, pears and oranges were sold. The early course was laid out in fields owned by Mr Hudson and Mr Richardson and, after racing, a dinner to thank them was held in the Ruxton Arms. Racing was held annually under the names Ardee, Louth Hunt or Mullacurry for almost 100 more years before a final meeting on Thursday 17th April 1958.

I am grateful to Frank Heaney for the very rare Dundalk badge shown below. Whilst it is difficult to date, it does have one clue which might help, it was made by WEIR and they do not make the modern badges. If anyone can help date it then email johnwslusar@gmail.com
